New York’s Convention Center Development Corporation selected Tishman to initially provide Owner’s Representative services, and then Construction Management services, for the expansion and renovation of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, one of the nation’s largest facilities of its kind. The original complex was designed by IM Pei and completed in 1986, comprising 760,000 square feet and covering 20 acres.
Phase I involves the construction of a new, LEED®-Silver, 110,000-square-foot expansion being built adjacent to the existing facility. In Phase II, Tishman is overseeing the removal of every pane of glass in the main building and replacing all 8,000 of them with new, low-e glass; the installation of a new roof, including the largest green roof in New York; the installation of new, high-efficiency rooftop mechanical units; the painting of the interior structural space frame; and the upgrading of life-safety and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
Tishman is using BIM modeling to facilitate logistics and scheduling so the majority of the building remains accessible to, and safe for, the public at all times.
